A Shocker In College Student Papers
A Shocker In College Student PapersThere is a shocker in college student papers in the middle of last week. The word 'College' used as a verb was removing to change it to 'One-Year College,' but it looks like the shocker was the use of 'College' as a noun.To many people, nouns are very important. They tell the reader or audience what they mean. For example, if you were to use the word 'College' as a noun, you would mean a particular kind of learning. There are colleges that teach video games or computer programming, or a college that teaches theater or the performing arts. College students go to college for many reasons and one of those reasons is to become more educated, and therefore more skilled in their field. And when college students go to one-year colleges, they go there to get a jump start on what they have learned so far at their full-time school. Sometimes they will take courses that are specifically geared toward one-year college students who want to develop skills that they need to be successful once they return to their universities. It may seem silly, but to some students, a one-year college seems less difficult than it would if it were a full-time university. However, using the word 'one-year' has the potential to create confusion when referring to a particular year. With this kind of ambiguity in mind, it was smart of the college student's papers to remove the word 'one-year' from the phrase 'one-year college.' Although they did not remove the word from the word itself, it makes it much more difficult to confuse it with the term 'one-year college' and therefore the one-year college sets the expectation that the student taking the class should expect the course to be challenging.Of course, the use of the word 'one-year' is also unfortunate because it creates the expectation that the student taking the course must be relatively comfortable with the idea of attending a one-year college. That is definitely not the case.In fact, most students that go to one-year college do not enjoy the experience and find the class a big turn off. However, if they had known the word 'one-year' was in the class description, they may have been more prepared for the challenge that lies ahead.
